Background of the Study

Recycling has emerged as a critical strategy for waste management and environmental sustainability, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas such as Gombe Local Government Area (LGA), Gombe State. Development communication plays a vital role in promoting recycling practices by raising awareness, educating the public, and encouraging behavioral change. Effective communication strategies—such as community campaigns, workshops, and media outreach—enhance understanding of the environmental and economic benefits of recycling (Bello et al., 2023; Musa & Ahmed, 2024). Globally, studies indicate that participatory communication approaches that involve stakeholders at the grassroots level result in higher adoption rates of recycling practices (Yusuf et al., 2025). This study investigates the use of development communication in promoting recycling in Gombe LGA, with a focus on communication strategies, community engagement, and the overall impact on waste management.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Gombe LGA, waste management remains a pressing challenge, with limited awareness and adoption of recycling practices exacerbating environmental degradation. Development communication efforts aimed at promoting recycling are often fragmented and lack cultural relevance, reducing their effectiveness (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). Furthermore, inadequate infrastructure and community resistance to change hinder the implementation of recycling initiatives (Okafor et al., 2025). This study assesses the role of development communication in addressing these challenges, identifying effective strategies for promoting recycling practices in Gombe LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of development communication in promoting recycling practices in Gombe LGA.

  2. To identify effective communication strategies for increasing community participation in recycling initiatives.

  3. To evaluate the impact of development communication on waste management and environmental sustainability in Gombe LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does development communication promote recycling practices in Gombe LGA?

  2. What communication strategies are most effective in increasing community participation in recycling initiatives?

  3. What is the impact of development communication on waste management and environmental sustainability in Gombe LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Development communication significantly promotes recycling practices in Gombe LGA.

  2. Certain communication strategies are more effective in increasing community participation in recycling initiatives.

  3. Development communication positively impacts waste management and environmental sustainability in Gombe LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the importance of development communication in addressing environmental challenges, particularly in promoting recycling practices. By identifying effective communication strategies and evaluating their impact, the research provides valuable insights for policymakers, environmental organizations, and community leaders. It contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable waste management and environmental conservation, offering practical recommendations for enhancing recycling initiatives in Gombe LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Gombe Local Government Area, Gombe State, examining the use of development communication in promoting recycling practices and its impact on community participation and waste management.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Development Communication: The strategic use of communication to promote recycling practices and environmental sustainability.

  2. Recycling Practices: The process of collecting, processing, and reusing materials to reduce waste and conserve resources.

  3. Gombe Local Government Area: A region in Gombe State, Nigeria, with significant waste management challenges.
